AITA for telling my husband I wanted a divorce after I found out he had been lying about his career?
I (29F) married Mark (33M) three years ago. He’s always been a hard worker, and I admired his ambition. We had talked extensively about our future and the goals we had. Mark always told me about his dream of starting his own business, and how he was working towards making that happen. I believed him, and I was fully supportive of his plans.
But things started to feel strange when he started working less and less. He would disappear for days at a time, claiming that he was "working on a project" or "meeting clients." But whenever I asked him for details, he would become defensive, saying that it was private or that it didn’t concern me. His behavior changed—he became distant and irritable.
One day, I stumbled upon a folder on his computer that was filled with resumes and job applications for jobs he had applied to in the past six months. He wasn’t starting his own business—he had been lying to me. He had quit his job months ago and had been searching for a new one without telling me. He was too embarrassed to admit that his dreams of entrepreneurship had failed, so he made up a story to cover it up.
When I confronted him about the lies, he broke down and admitted that he had been living in fear of disappointing me. But I felt completely betrayed. He had kept such a major secret from me, one that affected our future and our financial stability. I couldn’t trust him anymore.
I told him I wanted a divorce, and now, he’s devastated. He says that I overreacted and that he didn’t want to disappoint me. My friends and family are divided, with some saying I was justified and others saying I should have been more understanding.
So, AITA for telling my husband I wanted a divorce after I found out he had been lying about his career?
